The NBA finals currently being played in the USA at the moment are probably the second biggest summer sports event currently happening, considering the only other major competition being played out at the moment is the FIFA World Cup there will undoubtedly be plenty of rivalries brought up with Argentina and Germany being among England’s well known adversaries.

But in the Basketball world there is no greater rivalry than the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers, for decades the two teams have been the two top teams, one form the east and one from the west. This year yet again they face each other in the NBA Finals in the latest battle between the two teams.

This year a lot of sports coaches could learn a thing or two from the performance of both teams but more importantly how their coaches are handling the pressure of the global spotlight. The Los Angeles Lakers may seem to have an advantage having coach Phil Jackson who has not only won multiple championships with the Lakers but Jackson was also the coach at the Chicago Bulls when Michael Jordan was still playing too.

All this experience may seem like a fairly straight forward battle with the less experienced Doc Rivers of the Boston Celtics, but Doc Rivers’ team beat LA two years ago with a tremendous show of team spirit and a desire to win that saw their team which aside from their three main players, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen didn’t really have many big names to contain arguably the greatest NBA player since Michael Jordan: Kobe Bryant.

The Celtics beat the Lakers in 2008 mainly due to their team spirit and the coach’s willingness to play bench players who had specific roles, not everyone on the team was a perfect well-rounded player but each one was able to bring an important element to the table that helped them win that year.

The Lakers were criticised for over-relying on their star player who would often be tasked with bringing the team back in the dying minutes of the game. This year though the LA team and most likely their coach as well have learnt that they need to approach the finals as a team. The team now has more trust in one another and most importantly the confidence that they can all contribute to seal a win.

With this year’s finals being fairly closely matched there is much pressure on both teams’ coaches and if you want to see how they handle the pressure and observe their tactics then as a sports coach whether you Coach Basketball or not you’ll definitely learn a few vital lessons.

Are you living from pay check to pay check like over 50% of all Americans? Do you feel like you only enough money to pay your bills, take care of a few essentials and maybe get to go out and have a little fun? Saving money seems like a wonderful idea but there just isn’t the extra to save. It means that you may want to re-evaluate your budget or spending. Planning makes saving very easy. Let’s look at a few ideas that can help you manage your money.

Here is a quick and easy tip to get you started. Maybe you wrote out a budget and found that it is in the negative each month. Loose change is king. Don’t hate all of those coins in your pockets or at the bottom of your purse. Turn loose change into a nice savings plan. Get a large jar or can and everyday deposit all loose change daily. Make sure you hide the can so that the money in it doesn’t become pop and chip money.
Set a goal of about $1.50 per day or the cost of 1 soft drink which is $45.00 per month. If this is too big cut it down and start with only $25 per month which is only .83 cents per day. Don’t be afraid to push yourself. This money is for you. Consider having the money deducted directly from your check or bank account. Make these payments to the savings account automatic. By making your payments automatic you will be consistent and you won’t be tempted to spend it.
Open a savings account that is not easily accessible. If the goal is to save money it can not be in an account with Debit Card or ATM access. This allows the account time to grow before you pinch off of it.
Try not to use a Debit Card. Use cash only. Debit Cards give you a false sense of security and often cause you to overspend.
Reduce the number of times you eat out. Track the dollars spent each month dinning out. If you normally spend $300.00 a month dinning out try spending $200.00 per month and take the additional $100.00 and open a savings account.
Finally, create a budget. I know it sounds old fashioned and boring but it works! I asked a friend to help me with this example. I asked her how much she pays out each month in bills, she said “a lot”. I asked her if she could save $150.00 a month and she said it’s possible only with a budget.

Real Life Example

My friend’s name is Beverly. She is a single mother of a handsome 14 year old boy. She lives in a 2-bedroom apartment, drives a 2005 Ford Focus and has a supportive x-husband who actively provides financial and emotional support. Her son is a typical young adult who loves sports. His favorite sports are Basketball and Golf. Here is how we got her to save $150.00 per month

Beverly earns approximately 50,000 per year before taxes and receives about $5000 per year via child support. Let’s look at her bills and see if we can reach our goal of saving $150.00 per month.

Beverly saves 5% of her gross earnings through her jobs 401k plan. Her monthly bills equal $2647.00 before her savings goal of $150.00 per month with her savings calculated into the total monthly bills she spends $2747.00. Her bill break down is below. Beverly brings home $3246.00 per month. This number includes $400.00 per month from her Ex-Husband and $1423 paid twice per month from her job. This leaves Beverly with $499 per month to enjoy. Another way to look at this is Beverly can spend $116.43 per week on anything she desires.

Here are Beverly’s Monthly Expenses:

$965.00 – Rent
$50.00 Electricity
$60.00 Phone
$75.00 Cable
$89.00 Cell-phone
$100.00 Per month in gas for her car
$80.00 laundry and dry cleaning
$300.00 per month for groceries
$336.00 car note
$67.00 car insurance
$100.00 credit cards
$100.00 per month for fun money
$275.00 per month tithes and offerings
$150.00 per month savings goal

Create a budget by understanding where your money is being spent each month and how much is left over to use for fun. This should take less than 30 minutes. Don’t leave out any monthly bills. Using a budget is the most effective way to save money.

If you happen to spend all of the money you have saved, don’t dwell on it. Start over immediately. Over time you will be very proud of the results.

Along with the prestigious title comes responsibility and accountability to the team. Basketball Drills for guards are very helpful in acquiring these characteristics. The skills, the attitude and the determination of the guard will have an impact on the team. It is up to him to be a leader, the captain of the team.

On the court it is important to be able to handle the ball, dribble the ball, pass the ball, think quickly and act fast. When you pair drills with tenacity and patience, your team will be awesome. We can never quit learning and we can always get better. The coach on the team will be able to see what drills are needed according to what the players require to improve.

All players will require drills, but a guard really needs to put in the extra work. There are professional players out there who practice upwards of ten hours a day. Not everyone will be this dedicated, but by mastering the drills the coach gives, you will be on the right track. Remember, hard work and practice pay off.

Some might use the chair break drill. First set up several chairs, with the spacing between them placed depending on how challenging you would like the Basketball Practice drills to be. Someone needs to be positioned in the wing, usually a coach or someone helping you who can keep score. Set a chair on the other side of the court with a ball on the seat. Now start running and dribbling through the chairs in and out until you get to the last one then throw the ball single-handed to the coach. After that, retrieve the ball from the chair and slam dunk! Not really a jump shot will do. Have the person in the wing keeping tally of your scores.

Remember a good guard can use both hands equally. In any situation, he can use his stronger hand or the weaker hand. There are strength-building exercises that one can practice to make this easier. Practice these often until it doesn’t make a difference which hand you use.

Repeatedly push the ball forward and then pull back. Start off doing this in front of you. It is good to try this from the side too. This drill will help you get accustomed to using the weaker hand. Before long you will be using it just as much as the stronger hand.

Also dribble as hard and as wild as you can. Practice gaining control of the ball. It will seem hard at first, but once you can accomplish holding on to the ball with the awkward dribbling, it will be a walk in the park when you dribble normally. Greatness takes time, but with continued practice you will get there.

The guard on the team is as important to basketball as a quarterback is to football. With a determined guard, you can have a determined team. Remember, use basketball practice drills as often as you can and your team will be hard to stop. Basketball drills for guards can make all the difference.

basketball shooting tips and drills?

ima pretty good baller and im at the YMCA at least if not 4 times a week, im 13 and i want to get better at my shooting i mean i can shoot at times(i can shoot 15 out of 25 three pointers and today i knocked down 8 out of 10 free throws) like kobe and then the next day my form will be different. how can i keep my form the same?
and i also want to work on some calf exercices and dribbling to. can you guys tell me some drills or send me a link please ASAP.

(http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/1-on-1-part1), spoke to the teaching of offensive basics for balance, control, ball handling and dribbling. If the youngsters are ready, now the defensive side of the 1-on-1 equation can be introduced.

Just as with offensive skills, the defensive skills must be taught from the most basic—meaning stance, balance and movement—before introducing a dribbler into the mix. A player must understand the role of the defender as being one of containment first, learning to play between the ball and the basket, without thinking about stopping the dribbler or taking away the ball.

For both the sake of the offensive player’s newly learned dribbling skills and the defender’s newly learned defensive skills, it should be a while before the teaching-coach allows game-speed action. Let the players learn their skills and hone their skills under control and with the teaching-coach’s direction. There will be the rest of their playing careers to go at it live 1-on-1. Allow each player the opportunity to grow their skill development and understanding of the game. Be patient, coaches!

The above articles about defense basically brought the defensive player up to the point of playing against a dribbler. After lots of dribbling drills and controlled dribbling vs. defense drills, the teaching-coach can begin to now introduce a little more aggressive play where pressure is put on the dribbler in an attempt to direct the dribbler where the defender wants the ball to go. better basketball DVDs–worth getting, if so which one?

I’m looking into the 1 on 1 offense or the dribbling one. I want one where I wouldn’t already know the drills from camp or what not. I play varsity bball so I know a pretty much the basic drills. does anyone who has any of these feel theyve gotten better with these videos?
The 1 on1 bball dvd is 3 1/2 hours long vs. the 47 minutes of the dribbling dvd, so I didn’t know if the quality of the content of the dribbling dvd overcomes the length of the other one.
I forgot to add–does the 1 on 1 dvd have a lot of instruction/tips? b/c in the preview, it seems like they have a bunch of clips of games

If I practice shooting a basketball will i get better even if the rim is lower than ten feet.?

I am starting to practice shooting a basketball on a Basketball Rim that is 7-8 feet tall. and the regulation basketball rim is 10 feet tall will my basketball shots improve even though the rim is 2-3 feet shorter. I noticed when I started shooting at the 10 foot rim I had to make adjustments in my arc and power in my shots.

yeah there is an improvement even if the ring is short…u have more confidence to release the ball at the right time if u keep on practicing …but there should be an adjustments when ur going to use the 10 feet tall…but nevertheless you know ur weakness and strength in shooting the ball….
