What type of drill and drill bit do I need?
I am completely new to drill and want to drill 3 holes to mount something on the wall. Someone here mentioned that there are two types of drill bits used for both drilling wood and drilling concrete – a masonry drill bit and a twist drill bit.
I live in an apartment, and want to drill a miniature basketball hoop (comes with a foam ball/ won’t be loud). The hoop, however is at least 10 pounds when put together. I am wondering what type of drill and drill bit I will need to use? I ask because I am not entirely sure what the dry white wall in my bedroom is made from? Also, when I do drill through the wall, what will the stud likely be made of? Is it wood?
By the way I will need a 3/16 inch drill bit but the problem is I’m not sure what type of drill bit, and also drill, that I will need to use for this task since I’m not entirely sure what the wall from my apartment is made from and what the stud is made from.
Thanks in advance
You asked this question or variations on it at least 5 times already.
Type of drill and bit are easy, just get the common cheapest ones you can find at a store. Plain bits designed for wood will work fine. Wallboard is very soft and easy to drill through. You can actually use a hammer and nail to make a hole a lot cheaper.
It takes a bit more work to drill through the wallboard if you hit a stud but just keep pressing, it will go in.
The stud is made from pine usually, although some new construction uses sheet metal studs, which require special screws and drills. You can detect a metal stud with a magnet.
As I mentioned before, this is too heavy a weight to suspend from plain screws attached just to drywall. Drywall is too weak to hold anything heaver than a light picture without special procedures such as anchor bolts.
So you need to screw it into studs or use anchor bolts. You can get the latter at a hardware store.
Just take the thing to a good hardware store, they will tell you what to buy.
