Your Sporting Guide To Harlow – Basketball And Rugby
If you love either playing or watching sports, then Harlow has an extensive choice on offer. Just about any sport you are looking for can be found in or close to the town.
Two of the most prominent teams are the Harlow Hawks Basketball Club and Harlow Rugby Football Club, which we shall concentrate on in Part 1 of our Harlow Sports Guide.
Harlow Hawks Basketball Club is based at Harlow Sportcentre and runs a number of sessions which cover people of different abilities.
The club has come a long way since it was formally setup during the 1999-2000 season, when the first team was entered to compete in the Herts County League, with initially only 12 registered players. Today, the club now runs 2 senior Mens teams and junior teams in the U8, U11, U14 and U17 age groups. The U8 and U11 age groups play on lower baskets.
The senior teams compete in the Herts County League Div 1 and 2. The 1st team also compete in the National Founders Cup competition.
In addition to the Senior team training sessions, the club has an open scrimmage session which is for players that want to have a competitive run out. Some of the 1st and 2nd team players attend this session in addition to their team training.
Want to have a go at playing basketball, or have played before but want to do it for fun then the following is for you:
In September 2008, the club expanded the sessions that it ran to include an adult social session, which was aimed at people that just wanted to have a go at playing basketball without the competitive drills and commitment that comes with playing for a team setup. Slowly this has become successful with good numbers attending regularly, some of whom had never played before and who attend for fitness reasons as the session is just a few friendly games.
Harlow Rugby Football Club play their matches at Ram Gorse, Elizabeth Way Harlow. They currently field four mens teams, a ladies team and a full range of mini and junior teams. The first team play in London Division 3NE, the seconds in Div 1, and the thirds play in Div VI of the BL Essex Merit Table. The fourths play in the Deuxieme Division of the Greene King Merit table and cater for those looking for a more relaxed social game.
The club, which was founded in December 1955 at a meeting in the Essex Skipper pub, welcomes new players, coaches, supporters etc. from all ages and all walks of life. It is a subject of much debate, but it’s claimed that the original shirt colour was all green and later changed to green and white stripes. Nowadays, the club’s colours are predominantly red.
The club has always prided itself on having a superb junior section, with the plan to nurture talent for the senior teams. Between the 1979 & 1981, the Harlow Colts won an unbelievable 100 matches in a row, which was a magnificent achievement and led to much higher profile fixtures against teams such as Wasps, Saracens and Leicester.
With the Colts section being so strong, this inevitably led to many players progressing to the senior clubs sides, which led to success on the field. A few of these made the big step up to playing first class rugby, two of whom achieved junior international honours. The most successful was Steven Pope who went on to play for Wasps, Blackheath, London Welsh and Swansea, and then playing for England divisions against South Africa.
Despite having a thriving ladies team and over 150 registered youngsters, the club is always looking for players. So if Rugby is your game, why not get in touch with the club and get involved?
In Part 2 of the Harlow Sports Guide we shall be concentrating on some of the more obscure sports that can be found in the town. If you happen to be involved in any sporting organisations, please get in touch as we would love to hear from you.
