The Kentucky Derby has been run since 1875, more than 130 times without interruption – well into a second century and still counting with a heritage that carries a tale for every triumph. It is the tradition of the Twin Spires and mint juleps on the first Saturday in May – where the sun shines bright on clubhouse celebrities, infield revelers, and full-fledged Kentucky Colonels amidst a spectacle …

The basketball Hall of Fame was formed for all the right reasons in Springfield, Massachusetts. That was where basketball first started and it also was where everyone could gather to see the greatest ever. However, are the greatest actually there?

I say no. The basketball Hall of Fame does a good job of inducting people, but it seems like the highest level of players are slighted the most.

College Basketball has long been a staple of American interest. I watch it regularly. However, this is not the highest level of basketball. So why is a player who had a ton of success in college but only minor success in the NBA?

Two big examples of this is KC Jones and Bill Bradley. Now, both had outstanding careers in college, but their NBA careers were not HOF-worthy. However, as it stands now, it’s a basketball Hall of Fame. So that should mean than soon enough JJ Redick, Tyler Hansbrough and Danny Manning will be enshrined, right?

The solution to this problem is to have a NBA Hall of Fame separate from the others. The best players when playing against the best should have their own place to be praised. I shouldn’t see Dick Vitale in the same Hall of Fame as Dr. J, because their success was for two totally different reasons.

After all, you can compare this to yourself. Chances are, your best three athletes at your high school wouldn’t go to college and be the three best there. Each level of play the competition is higher. There should be a professional basketball Hall of Fame for the best of the best.

What to wear to a college Basketball Game for a 1st date?

I’m a huge sports fan. I’m going on a 1st date with a guy to a college basketball game. I’m the type of sports girl who rocks jeans, a cute team shirt and some shelltoes or cons- do I still wear that and be me or what should I wear since it’s a first date?

-Wear a college t-shirt (one for your team, that is. lol)
-Nice jeans that are long enough (not skinny jeans)
-Good tennis shoes. Not ‘Vans’. Nike (or something like that) would be good. Converse would be okay I guess.
-Some beads (college colors)

When I go to a game (it would be a Kentucky) here’s what I wear. Just mix n match with your college stuff.

NCAA College Basketball: History of the Washington Huskies

The Washington Huskies field a Basketball Team that plays at the Division 1 level of college basketball. The team plays in the Pac-10 conference. Over the years the team has managed to field teams that have been solid, but they have never been quite what was hoped for by the fans.

The team has never won a National Championship in the history of the school. They have had success in the NCAA Tournament at times, but they have never been able to go past the Final Four portion of the NCAA Tournament.

Despite the fact that the team has never found the success on a national level that they hoped for, they have been a successful school. They have won many, many conference championships over the years to show their success.

The success really started in the 1920’s for the team. The team was easily the most dominant of all of the teams in their conference in that decade and was able to bring him the conference championship 4 times in that span.

That start in the 20’s really paved the way for even more success in the 30’s. The team started off the 30’s with a stretch of three straight conference championships from 1930-1932. Those three straight conference championships contributed to the 6 total championships that they had over that decade. That decade may have been the most successful decade for the team in their history.

Although people were winning conference and national championships before the NCAA Tournament came around, they weren’t as meaningful. The NCAA Tournament brings a certain excitement to basketball that was never found before it was created. The Huskies got their first taste of that excitement in the 1940’s.

In 1943 the team won the conference championship and managed to qualify for the NCAA tournament. This was the first of 15 appearances that the school has made in the tournament over the years. Unfortunately the team was not able to advance to the 2nd round of the tournament.

The 1950s brought tremendous success for the team. In 1951 and 1953 the team managed to qualify for the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. In 1953 the team even managed to go all the way to the final four before they fell.

In 1984 the team found a ton of excitement in the tournament. The team had won the conference championship and went into the tournament with some momentum. They managed to advance not only past their first opponent, but their second as well. This left the team in the Sweet 16 for the first time in the history of the school.

The team has recently become even more successful. Over the last 15 years the team has managed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament 7 times. It seems like just about every time that the team makes the tournament they are able to make a run. Of those 7 appearances they have won at least one game in the tournament 5 times and they have advanced to the sweet sixteen 4 times. The last took place last season and left the team excited for what might come in 2011.

What would you do with the knowledge that you can quite quickly elevate your basketball abilities by an impressive 30%? And that’s not all, it can be accomplished through special exercises on your personal computer. If you find yourself doubting this, or think that this is impossible, review the information that follows – it is going to shock you.

Before we get into details, you need to be aware of a simple but key fact – in the game of basketball it is not about running, jumping, and shooting better than the next player, rather, it’s about who knows what to do and when to do it. The power to know your rival’s game strategy, or make quick and precise steals or assists, for instance, has to do with cognitive abilities, or in simple words: brain skills. Most people mistakenly consider these athletic abilities as something athletes are predisposed to, while in fact, they are not just something athletes are born with, but instead are completely attainable brain skills.

It is not important if you just need to know more about becoming an american basketball star, or whether you are still a student – in junior-high, high-school, or university – it’s very possible to better your game intelligence and start scoring like a pro with this unique brain training technique. A team of scientists has created a specialized solution which helps you to do just that; using the very user-friendly format of a “video game”, the user simply “plays” it for just 20-30 minutes once or twice a week, for only a few weeks – the outcome is truly impressive. Head coaches from across the usa (memphis, uconn, connecticut and others) have noticed a dramatic upswing right after practicing individual players and even the whole team with this amazing solution.

Before going on to get more information about becoming an american basketball star, it is possible to sample this amazingly effective and innovative solution. Thanks to this terrific system, the hope of becoming a dominant and successful basketball player for many ambitious players has not until now been so reachable; users of this innovative system reported an impressive upswing in their game after just 2-3 weeks of “training”.

I was wondering which basketball i should get. Either the Spalding TF-1000 ZK Pro; or the Nike 4005 Tournament; or the Wilson Solution Game Ball. Or any other good INDOOR balls. I want one with good grip and one that doesnt slip out of your hands when sweaty.

DEFINETELY THE NIKE 4005

the tf 1000 is good too and we use both at practice on my schools bball team but you cant compare the two the nike 4005 is soft and sticks in your hand
all your shots will go in

just never use either of them off of the hardwood, theyll be ruined

College Basketball: NCAA Championships

Not all children are able to continue their education to the college level. Earning a college degree can be difficult. Location, available courses need to be carefully considered, as well as the cost of enrollment. Many students therefore apply for financial aid; if they are talented in sports, they look into sports scholarships, which could also serve as a stepping stone for a career in professional sports. They test their probability of availing such scholarships during the recruitment period. Students who are gifted in basketball, for instance, try out in college basketball recruiting.

The NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship is a college basketball event held each spring featuring 65 college basketball teams from across the United States. This tournament is organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and was first developed in 1939 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Renowned Kansas coach Forrest Clare “Phog” Allen is credited as first coming up with the idea. Also known as “March Madness”-being that the event is held for the most part during March-or the Big Dance, the tournament spans three weeks, and hosted at sites across the United States. The national semifinals, known as “the Final Four” have become one most-watched sporting events in America.

Since its inception the championship has developed a tradition of dynastic teams and dramatic upsets. Betting on games has become popular over recent years, resulting in nationwide office pools drawing expert fans and newbies alike. The tournament bracket is comprised of conference tournament winners from each Division I conference, which in turn receive automatic bids. The remaining open slots are at-large berths, and the teams are chosen by an NCAA selection committee.

Students who are serious in applying for sports scholarships need plenty of help if they are to reach their goal. Information is a key factor in increasing the likelihood of getting noticed in college basketball recruiting. The Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both student athletes and coaches involved in the process of college recruiting. Students can learn how to succeed in college basketball recruiting. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact. D1Athletes is an online community wherein people can share and exchange information they need in the search for sports scholarships. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.

How many people can play basketball really well that wished they had played college basketball?

I’m 30 years old, and well, I never developed a jump shot until after High School. Later, I became really good. I joined the Army for 8 years, and then got out I’m now 30 years old. I can still play basketball exceptionally well. Sad truth is, no one is going to take a 30 year old college basketball player, or NBA rookie for that matter. I play for sport and fun now. However, anyone like me, and wish they had really went out for the NBA in hard work and pursuit?

“Young veteran, I just plan to enroll into a major conference,
division one university, live off-campus, then ‘go-for-what-I-
know’.”

“If you’re, like myself, SKILLED ENOUGH to take a chance at
investing close to one thousand dollars on a trip to an N.B.A.
pre-season training camp, (better off spending the money
trying out for an N.B.A. Summer League team), then enroll
already into that major conference university, paid for with
your own finances and financial aid.”

“If my finances arrive to my bank checking account soon
enough, I could try out for the university varsity basketball
team during the summer.”

“If not, I’ll wait until August Basketball Team try-outs, and make
an attempt to ‘WALK-ON’ as a player on the roster.”

“I’m GOOD ENOUGH to turn down all athletic scholarships for
both baseball and basketball, only to finance MY OWN
EDUCATION.”

“I don’t need to start the game TO WIN the game.”

“I can spend my Veterans Affairs pension on my education
and allow barely grown, young men who have become a
McDonald’s Basketball High School All-American to play
under scholarship and START.”

“I can also pass a scholarship over to an otherwise younger
man, who may have ‘WALKED-ON’ the team himself.”

“Besides, I’m SO RESPONSIBLE for myself, I don’t want to
have to share the same bedroom or bathroom with any of
these young men whom have never been responsible for
themselves in their natural lives.”

NFL Mock Draft 2010, Rounds 1 and 2: How Far Will Carlos Dunlap Fall?

2010 NFL Mock Draft, Rounds 1 and 2

Only four-and-a-half months until the highly anticipated 2010 NFL draft.

Can you feel the excitement in the air, or are you too busy feeling the holiday vibe?

As per usual, I will update my mock draft every single week.

Without further ado, let’s get to it!

1. Cleveland Browns—Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback, Notre Dame

Alright, let’s get over the fact that both Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen went to Notre Dame. It does not mean that they are virtually the same exact quarterback.

The perception that Clausen is a Quinn 2.0 just isn’t fair and just shows foolish judgment.

Jimmy Clausen is a slightly better quarterback than Jake Locker is. Clausen has had to go up against some of the better colleges in all of college football.

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers—Ndamukong Suh, Defensive Tackle, Nebraska

I’ve received some criticism for this pick because people think that Tampa Bay taking Suh is just getting plain old.

So what?

If you want the best player available, you take Suh. He will make a perfect fit for their scheme, and will go great with Roy Miller on the defensive line.

I can’t see Tampa Bay going any other way, but with the Nebraskan phenom.

3. St. Louis Rams—Jake Locker, Quarterback, Washington

Kyle Boller is great! Did you see the game he had on Sunday? Only kidding, he still is terrible.

If St. Louis doesn’t draft a quarterback in the first round, I will drive to Missouri to personally set fire to the houses of the people that made the decision.

Jake Locker has a great arm, size, and all the tools that are needed to be a great NFL quarterback.

Now only if he had weapons to throw to… Well, there are rounds 2-7, I guess.

4. Detroit Lions—Gerald McCoy, Defensive Tackle, Oklahoma

Normally I would have Russell Okung going here, but for some reason the Lions’ offensive line coach, George Yarno, said he liked the way Jeff Backus has been playing as of late.

I guess giving up 7.5 sacks through 11 games is acceptable. But then again, Detroit has won a mere two games in the last two seasons!

Gerald McCoy is a stud, no doubt. Detroit will love to have this guy to dominate on their defensive line. Don’t be surprised if he winds up being the defensive rookie of the year next season.

5. Kansas City Chiefs—Russell Okung, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma State

Kansas City will not have any success throwing the ball if they can’t keep Matt Cassel on his feet.

In nine games played, Branden Albert has already surrendered nine sacks. What has happened to this guy!?

Russell Okung is a must-pick selection. He’s easily the best offensive tackle in the nation. Kansas City would be imbeciles if they didn’t make this pick.

6. Washington Redskins—Sam Bradford, Quarterback, Oklahoma

Daniel Snyder loves going after big-name players. Albert Haynesworth, DeAngelo Hall, Clinton Portis, and Brian Orakpo for example?

Jason Campbell may never succeed in the NFL, especially not with the Washington Redskins.

He is done.

Sam Bradford’s arm will be fine by the time the combine rolls around. He will impress scouts, propelling him into the top-10.

7. Buffalo Bills—Ryan Mallett, Quarterback, Arkansas

The likes of Rolando McClain, Dan Williams, and Eric Berry sound intriguing, but the fact of the matter is that the Bills have two terrible quarterbacks on their roster in Ryan Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards.

Seriously, does this team expect to win more than five games next year with either one of these two at the helm? I hope not.

Ryan Mallett has had a great season with Arkansas. Is he a reach at No. 7? Possibly. But Buffalo needs a QB and Ryan Mallett needs Buffalo.

8. Oakland Raiders—Rolando McClain, Inside Linebacker, Alabama

Perhaps not the biggest need, but when you think about it, Kirk Morrison is set to be a free-agent when this season comes to an end.

Rolando McClain had a monster game in the SEC championship against the Florida Gators, only cementing his status as a top-10 pick.

Al Davis, if your brain hasn’t turned into dust already, draft McClain. You won’t regret it.

9. Denver Broncos—Dan Williams, Nose Tackle, Tennessee

Dan Williams is quickly rising up the draft boards in the last few weeks. He had a tremendous season with the Volunteers this year.

Denver lacks a great nose tackle. Ronald Fields? Not going to cut it. A player like Williams will.

10. San Francisco 49ers from Carolina—Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee

It’ll come down to either Eric Berry or Joe Haden with this pick. I will give the 49ers Berry, though.

Berry is considered to be the best overall athlete in the entire draft? Why not? This guy is the best safety to come out in a long time.

11. Seattle Seahawks—Bruce Campbell, Offensive Tackle, Maryland

The Seahawks offensive line has many holes that need to be filled by new talent. Max Unger was a good pick in the 2009 draft.

Walter Jones has missed the entire season. Despite his intent to play in 2010, Jones is not starting material any longer.

Bruce Campbell is what the Seahawks need. They won’t regret this choice.

12. San Francisco 49ers—Joe Haden, Cornerback, Florida

I know, it seems crazy. Joe Haden and Eric Berry with the first two picks? Let me explain why.

San Francisco has one of the worst secondaries in the league, for starters. With Eric Berry and Joe Haden in, the 49ers will automatically have one of the best secondaries in the league.

They could trade one of these two picks for a first in 2011, or trade Nate Clements for a second- or third-round choice.

13. Houston Texans—Taylor Mays, Safety, USC

Taylor Mays falling this far would be terrific for the Texans. They need help in the secondary.

Eugene Wilson is not going to do the job for Houston’s secondary. Mays can step in right away and dominate.

Mays and Bernard Pollard would make a great duo at safety.

14. Tennessee Titans—Donovan Warren, Cornerback, Michigan

Nick Harper is far past his prime. The reason for the Titans terrible secondary is because he can’t cover for crap.

His contract expires at the end of the season. Unless the Titans are stupid, they will let him walk.

Donovan Warren will be a day-one starter if they draft him.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers—Earl Thomas, Safety, Texans

Troy Polamalu is injured often. When he is out, the Steelers are terrible. This shows how important one guy can be.

With that said, Polamalu needs a partner along side him in the secondary.

Ryan Clark and Tyrone Carter are both free-agents when this season is over. Earl Thomas can replace both of these guys.

16. New York Jets—Damian Williams, Wide Receiver, USC

Damian Williams didn’t have the greatest game vs. Arizona last weekend, but nobody from USC really did.

Braylon Edwards has dropped several key passes this year, once again. New York can let him go after this year.

In conclusion, Mark Sanchez will want a new target. His former teammate sounds perfect.

17. Atlanta Falcons—Brandon Graham, Defensive End, Michigan

Atlanta is one of the worst teams in the league at getting pressure on the quarterback.

Atlanta lacks a strong defensive end on the opposite side of the aging Jonathan Abraham.

Jamaal Anderson has been a bust thus far. Brandon Graham will step in to take his place.

18. Miami Dolphins—Terrence Cody, Nose Tackle, Alabama

Terrence Cody has slipped as of late because of the fact that Dan Williams has surpassed him for the No. 1 nose tackle spot.

Jason Ferguson turns 34 soon, and his contract expires in March. Miami will need a replacement.

19. Baltimore Ravens—Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State

The Ravens have very few targets on offense. Derrick Mason will likely hang it up after this season is over. Keep in mind, he already retired once.

Dez Bryant, despite missing almost all season for the Cowboys, will be a top-20 pick with a strong combine.

Joe Flacco needs weapons. He will get a great one in Bryant.

20. New York Giants—Brandon Spikes, Middle Linebacker, Florida

Antonio Pierce is out for the season. Not to mention, he is near the end of his illustrious career with the Giants.

New York has a few needs on defense that they need to fix. Middle linebacker is the main one.

Brandon Spikes was dominant with the Gators in college. He will be dominant with the Giants in the NFL.

21. Jacksonville Jaguars—Tim Tebow, Quarterback, Florida

It seems that the Jaguars drafting Tim Tebow is pretty much inevitable at this point. When the governor starts talking about him, it’ll likely happen.

Tebow has stated that he will play any position that a team in the NFL sees fit. Will it be at quarterback? Doubtful. But he will be absolutely stellar in the wildcat formation.

22. New England Patriots—C.J. Spiller, Running Back, Clemson

How can having Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and C.J. Spiller on one team be fair? It shouldn’t.

Laurence Maroney is the definition of inconsistent. Fred Taylor will never start again. Sammy Morris is a decent third-string running back.

Spiller is a dynamic playmaker who is tough to stop.

23. Green Bay Packers—Charles Brown, Offensive Tackle, USC

Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers gets hit on almost every dropback the guy takes. That is preposterous!

They need serious help if they expect Rodgers to continue to be injury-free for a long time.

Charles Brown is the perfect fit for the Packers offensive line scheme.

24. Dallas Cowboys—Anthony Davis, Offensive Tackle, Rutgers

Flozell Adams is likely to retire soon. He’s near the end of his career, and obviously wearing down physically.

Jerry Jones usually goes after big names, but Anthony Davis, despite not being a big name, is the right pick for the Cowboys.

25. Philadelphia Eagles—Mike Iupati, Offensive Guard, Idaho

Andy Reid loves big offensive lineman. Reid actually drafted a guard in the middle of the first round 6 years ago. That guard was Shawn Andrews.

Thus far, Andrews has been a bust. Just chalk it up to a great idea that didn’t pan out.

Mike Iupati is a great pick for the Eagles here.

26. Seattle Seahawks from Denver—Jahvid Best, Running Back, California

Jahvid Best will still be available when this pick rolls around, that is unless he has a great combine.

Justin Forsett has shown signs of stardom this year, but even with him playing extremely well, Jim Mora Jr. said Julius Jones would start over him upon his return from injury.

27. Arizona Cardinals—Jermaine Gresham, Tight End, Oklahoma

Can you name the Arizona Cardinals starting tight end right now? I strongly doubt it. Anthony Becht and Ben Patrick have split time this year.

Jermaine Gresham is miles better than both of these. His stock has obviously dropped because he missed his entire senior season.

With that said, Grehsam will be another weapon for Kurt Warner to throw to, unless Warner retires.

28. Cincinnati Bengals—Ras-I Dowling, FS/CB, Virginia

Cincinnati doesn’t have many needs, thus they will look for depth in one area that they could use it in.

Morgan Trent as the nickel corner isn’t working out. In his rookie season, Ras-I Dowling will be able to play a lot of minutes in the nickel.

29. San Diego Chargers—Toby Gerhart, Running Back, Stanford

I will likely get ripped from limb by limb for having Toby Gerhart going in the first round of the draft.

The main reason that he’s not a projected first-round pick is because he’s a white running back. It’s like seeing the New Jersey Nets win a Basketball Game: it rarely happens.

Toby Gerhart is a tough, physical, and smart runner. I see no reason why San Diego shouldn’t draft him.

30. Minnesota Vikings—Travis Lewis, Outside Linebacker, Oklahoma

Haven’t changed my mind in the slightest. If Travis Lewis is there, the Vikings can and will select him.

With E.J. Henderson out for the year, Minnesota’s linebackers will have to step it up more than ever. If they had Lewis, they worries would be non-existent.

He’s not a middle linebacker, but Ben Leber can be if Henderson ever got hurt again.

31. Indianapolis Colts—Joseph Barksdale, Offensive Tackle, LSU

Charlie Johnson will become a free-agent when this season comes to an end. Indy will need a replacement for him.

The Colts will actually have a few needs when this season is over, despite the fact they are perfect right now.

Joseph Barksdale isn’t a household name, but you will hear about him more and more as the next few months come along.

32. New Orleans Saints—Sean Weatherspoon, Outside linebacker, Missouri

New Orleans has a few needs on defense, especially in the linebacking group.

Sean Weatherspoon is of good value with the last pick in the first round. New Orleans would be foolish to pass on this guy.

Round 2:

33. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Greg Hardy, Defensive End, Ole Miss

34. St. Louis Rams- Carlos Dunlap, Defensive End, Florida

35. Cleveland Browns- Jonathan Dwyer, Running Back, Georgia Tech

36. Detroit Lions- Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma

37. Kansas City Chiefs- Allen Bailey, Defensive Lineman, Miami

38. Washington Redskins- Jason Fox, Offensive Tackle, Miami

39. Oakland Raiders- Everson Griffen, Defensive End, USC

40. Buffalo Bills- Vince Oghobaase, Defensive Tackle, Duke

41. Carolina Panthers- Tony Pike, Quarterback, Cincinnati

42. Seattle Seahawks- Colt McCoy, Quarterback, Texas

43. San Francisco 49ers- Jerry Hughes, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, TCU

44. Houston Texans- Arthur Jones, Defensive Lineman, Syracuse

45. New England Patriots from Tennessee- Brandon Tate, Wide Receiver, Notre Dame

46. Tampa Bay Buccaneers from Chicago- Arrelious Benn, Wide Reciever, Illinois

47. New York Jets- Jared Odrick, Defensive lineman, Penn State

48. Kansas City Chiefs from Atlanta- Von Miller, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Texas A&M

49. Miami Dolphins- Nate Allen, Safety, South Florida

50. Baltimore Ravens- Kareem Jackson, Cornerback, Alabama

51. Pittsburgh Steelers- Mitch Petrus, Guard, Arkansas

52. New York Giants- Brandon Ghee, Defensive Back, Wake Forest

53. New England Patriots- Mike Neal, Defensive Lineman, Purue

54. New England Patriots from Jacksonville- Patrick Robinson, Cornerback, Florida State

55. Dallas Cowboys- Morgan Burnett, Safety, Georgia Tech

56. Green Bay Packers- Sergio Kindle, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Texas

57. Denver Broncos- Javier Arenas, Cornerback/Kick Returner, Alabama

58. Arizona Cardinals- Ricky Sapp, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Clemson

59. Philadelphia Eagles- Jeremy Beal, Defensive End, Oklahoma

60. Cincinnati Bengals- Marshawn Gilyard, Wide Reciever/Kick Returner, Cincinnati

61. San Diego Chargers- Marvin Austin, Defensive Tackle, North Carolina

62. Minnesota Vikings- Jevan Snead, Quarterback, Ole Miss

63. Indianapolis Colts- Daryl Washington, Inside Linebacker, TCU

There is no method by which you can improve your vertical jump in one weak and the people claiming such things are completely wrong. In fact these exercises will result in an injury and will never teach you to jump higher.

However, you can get desired results and thus improve your jump by performing some jump higher drills. You should make sure that you do these exercises consistently and speedily. Speed is another important thing required to jump higher vertical.

Perform some strength exercise for your body such as squats and dead lifts. It is always a good idea to increase your body strength before starting the training process.

It is a good idea to do some warm up exercises before starting exercising. Some of these exercises include leg stretching, which help you to loose your muscles. This will help you to perform other exercises easily and avoid any chances of an injury.

Cardiovascular exercises such as jogging and jump rope are also very effective jump higher exercises. These exercises will also help you to build a better stamina.

You are also advised to work hard on strengthening your toes as this will increase the pushing power of your feet while jumping.

Most importantly, you should not forget about the plyometrics jump higher exercises. These exercises are must to do in order to improve your vertical jump. These exercises are performed by the basketball players from a long time to help them achieving a high vertical leap.

How an Elite Basketball Camp Teaches You to Choke

How an Elite Basketball Camp Teaches You to Choke

They say players compete in the winter but they are made in the summer.

This may be true, but HOW they are made is a topic of much debate. What is the right mix of gym time, weight time, or game time? What are the best ways to spend that time: by yourself? In a pickup game? Attending the elite basketball camps? It can all be a little overwhelming, and you only have so much time.

That said, with all the work players put in to learning how to play the game, they tend to forget that they can get an enormous edge over their competition by learning how to THINK the game as well.

One of the elite basketball camps to address this is Point Guard College (don’t let the name fool you, they’re not just for point guards). Aside from intense on court training, they spend a large amount of time working on the psychological aspects of the game through video analysis, classroom training, and leadership development as well. The goal is to develop complete players, thinkers, and leaders in the community who are equally valuable off the court as they are on. And their approach is gaining ground.

Much of Point Guard College’s philosophy comes from the man who started it all, legendary basketball thinker Dick Devenzio, who not only started one of the elite basketball camps, he wrote one of the elite basketball books: Think Like a Champion. (When John Wooden says your camp and your book are the real deal, people pay attention.)

To get an idea of the kind of approach taken by the Point Guard College, take a look at one of the chapters in Dick’s book called “Choking”, which starts like this:

“If you do fear choking, and fear that your muscles tighten and your
nerves rattle and your performance suffers at the end of big games,
here are a few things to consider:

1. Everyone gets nervous at the end of big games. No harm in
that. It happens to even big stars. Remember (see the section
on “Nervousness”) nervousness is natural. Invite it in, don’t
try to avoid it. Embrace it. You can play well in spite of some
rattling nerves. Athletes do it all the time.

2. Remind yourself what got you to where you are. If you have
a lead near the end of a big game, how did you get it? Were
you aggressive? Did you execute sharply? Whatever got you
the lead is what can get you the victory. “Dance with who
brung ya,” as the old saying goes. Stick with what got you
there. Doing what you’ve been doing doesn’t guarantee you
a victory but it certainly makes sense to concentrate on doing
what has worked.

3. Take your attention off yourself and your own performance and
concentrate on lifting and inspiring your teammates. Not only
will your encouragement help them get past their jitters, the
action and intensity of your efforts will likely have a positive
impact on your jitters as well.

4. Remind yourself that you are playing a sport, that failure and
defeat are not the worst things in the world. They happen to
everyone. And even when you’re down, you have a chance. At
least go after it. Go for it. Carpe diem, seize the day. Put yourself
in a frame of mind to seek a victory aggressively rather than to
watch the clock, hoping the time ticks away before you have a
chance to lose.“

There are all kinds of things people can learn from attending a basketball camp, but these days, the elite basketball camps out there may be the ones that tell you how to think the game, and not just play it.

Dick would’ve wanted it that way!

How do bookies/bookmakers change odds?

When bookies make their book for example College Basketball, and the bookie has all the bets on one team and none on the other and he changes his odds to +4,-4, from +2, -2, wouldn’t he lose all the money in the book if the score was 80-83?
Thanks.

Yes, if they move the line too much they can get screwed and lose a lot.

Vegas often refers to “Black Sunday”, Pitt-Dallas superbowl, where the line started at Pitt – 3 1/2, and as people bet on Pitt, the line moved up to Pitt – 4 1/2, so people started betting Dallas. Pitt won by 4, Vegas lost a bit there.

That’s why they call it gambling.
