Much has been made of the personal branding of individuals. It’s been a hot subject In recent years. One of the great failures of personal branding has been playing out in public view for years.

Enter basketball great Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers.

His monumental failure to turn himself into a sterling brand is largely attributable to a predecessor who has one of the world’s strongest personal brands.

The overarching theme is this: Michael Jordan was an original and Kobe Bryant is a knockoff. But there’s more to the storyline than that, and it contains lessons for professionals in businesses other than sports. Learn from Bryant’s mistakes and you’re likely to avoid the same fate.

From a professional, on-court performance standpoint, the discrepancy between Bryant and Jordan shouldn’t be so vast. Bryant has put up huge numbers during his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, including having just won his fifth NBA championship, just one short of what Jordan posted with the Chicago Bulls.

Bryant has scored more than 25,000 points, and will likely equal or surpass Jordan’s 32,000-point career total. Bryant also shocked the basketball world in January 2006 when he scored a staggering 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, eclipsing Jordan’s 73-point performance years earlier. It was the second-biggest scoring night in NBA history; only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points in a 1962 game was bigger. (Some sports analysts said Bryant’s performance was even more impressive than Chamberlain’s.)

Lastly, Bryant has proven himself every bit as competitive and professionally disciplined as Jordan. He work ethic and refusal to quit on any play during any game is evident.

And what has Kobe Bryant gotten for all this? Just one Most Valuable Player award compared to six for Michael Jordan. He has received far fewer product endorsements, while Jordan is still pitching Hanes underwear and other products years after his retirement. And virtually every NBA announcer and analyst still keeps Michael Jordan in separate company. It was a big milestone for Bryant when television analysts acknowledged during this year’s NBA playoffs that Bryant should “at least be part of the conversation” as to whether his greatness is equal to Jordan’s.

He has just now earned the right to be part of the conversation? After all those accomplishments?

Yes, and here’s why. From Kobe Bryant’s earliest days in the league his admiration for Jordan was evident because he so closely emulated MJ’s playing style. Everything about Bryant’s manner said he was determined to become the next Michael Jordan – to prove he was as good as the man widely considered the greatest ever. Maybe even better.

And that spelled the end of any chance that Kobe Bryant had to create a brand of his own, one that could equal or surpass Jordan’s and endure the test of time.

Contrast that with Michael Jordan’s experience. Jordan was original, in part because the superstars immediately preceding him – the Boston Celtics’ Larry Bird and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Magic Johnson – were very different players stylistically. Bird and Johnson were marvelous talents, to be sure, but Jordan brought an athleticism and stamina the league had never seen the likes of – until Bryant came along.

There were other factors that made Jordan such an indomitable brand. He established several trademarks, including changing the NBA’s attire. Jordan – still enamored with his College Basketball uniform – wore his North Carolina University shorts and jersey under his Bulls uniform. To conceal the shorts and avoid violating the NBA’s dress code, Jordan started wearing baggy shorts. The entire National Basketball Association soon followed his lead.

Jordan’s far warmer, more playful personality and electric smile created better media, as well.

This two-person drama is a testimony to the power of personal brand. A strict numerical analysis of the two players would certainly place Bryant and Jordan on the same lofty pedestal. But that’s only half the story. Factor in their personal brands, though, and Jordan wins in a blow-out.

There are several lessons to be culled from this saga. They include:

Cocurriculars/extracurriculars do not need to happen at school in order for them to “count,” nor do you need to hold leadership positions. Even at the most competitive of colleges, it’s the quality of the work you do that matters the most, not the titles you hold or the number of activities in which you participate.

Almost everything you’ve listed — the library, your research work, tutoring, working as a secretary, being a Basketball Coach, and being a mentor — all would count as cocurriculars. For the mentoring, coaching, tutor, and such, be sure to mention the organization through which you participate in those activities, if any.

Teaching yourself a language and being a writer typically count as special skills, hobbies, or enrichment activities, which are always good to list on résumés. If you’ve had any writing published, you will also want to note when and where.

• Go through your ritual with the ball (whatever it may be, a spin, a couple of dribbles) calmly and consistently to get in rhythm.
• Assume the proper leg position, usually about shoulder length apart with shooting side leg slightly forward.
• Use proper Basketball Shooting techniques with the basketballball on fingertips, knees bent, and elbow in.
• Concentrate and follow through.

Basketball Free Throw Shooting Drills

• Rhythm Drill
  With this basketball drill, players gradually ease into their shooting rhythm. Each player starts near the basket and takes a shot, and when it is made, takes a couple of steps back and shoots another. Then a couple more steps back and another shot, and finally a fourth just inside the stripe. If they miss from any of these spots they keep shooting from there until they make one. After shooting and making four shots inside the stripe, they then shoot from the foul line until they make ten shots. Then, they make their way back to the start by shooting from the four positions inside the stripe in reverse order until they are back at the starting position.

• Concentration Drill
  During the basketball game, players are not going to have the luxury of a silent, meditative environment when they are shooting free throws (especially on the road). This drill will help players learn to keep their focus while being distracted. Divide the team into thirds and form three lines, one at the foul line for shooters and two other lines outside of and along the three second lane. The players along the lane try to distract the shooter, waving their arms, yelling, talking, anything they can do to try to break the shooter’s concentration. The shooter takes ten free throws. Players rotate and each one has his or her turn as the shooter.

Shorts are a garment worn by both men and women over their pelvic area, circling the waist, and covering the upper part of the upper legs or more, sometimes extending as far as mid-calf, but not covering the entire length of the leg, either as outer or undergarment. They are called “shorts” because they are a shortened version of trousers which cover the entire leg.

Within the United States, historically, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, shorts were only worn by young boys until they reached a certain height or maturity. Here there were different assessments from family to family, influenced in part by social class. This is not entirely accurate, however, especially for the 1890s and 1900s. Actually knee pants (an early type of short pants) became in the 1890s the standard trousers worn by American boys. Many urban school portraits from the 1890s often show all but the oldest boys wearing knee pants . We see boys of all ages wearing them. This can be confirmed by the sizes offered in period catalogs. especially boys and teenagers in urban areas and still in school. We note older boys wearing knee pants in America than in Europe. American boys normally wore knee pants with long stockings. This is covered in great detail in the Historical Boys’ Clothing website .This began to change after the 1900s when American boys began wearing knickers while short pants became more popular in Europe. When boys got older, they would receive their first pair of long trousers. This produced the perception that shorts were only for young boys. Because of this, men would not wear shorts to avoid looking immature. Since about World War II, when soldiers often served in tropical locations, adult men have worn shorts more often, but the perception of shorts only being for young boys took several decades to change and to some extent still exists. Today, shorts are worn by either sex from birth through old age without any stigma attached. In many countries there are few formal settings where wearing shorts would be acceptable, as they are considered casual wear. In many business offices, where there is an official casual dress standard, shorts are often specifically forbidden. Since the 1990s, casual office dress has grown in many businesses to include dress shorts. Gym and jean shorts are often seen as too casual for office attire. In Africa and the Middle East, the wearing of shorts by adults is less common. While it is common for boys to wear shorts, women and young girls almost universally do not. These customs are often due in part to moral and social taboos regarding the perceived sexually suggestive nature of exposing the female legs. Baggies: Loose fitting shorts which reach the knees. These were the standard shorts worn by English football teams before . World War II. West Bromwich Albion FC are nicknamed the Baggies because their team used to wear particularly baggy shorts. During the late 1990s this type of shorts had a short revival in popularity among some Premier league teams in England. Bermuda shorts (also known as walking shorts or dress shorts): Knee-length shorts commonly worn in Bermuda as business attire, or largely any style less than formal or black-tie . The style has also been adopted exclusively as a casual style in other locales. Usually has pockets and waist loops for an optional belt. Board shorts: A combination of shorts and a bathing suit, typically worn by men, which have recently gained in popularity. Board shorts are manufactured by such companies as Billabong, Quiksilver, and Old Navy. The shorts are made of a bathing suitike material, targeting a beach-going demographic. The “board” refers to surfboards although many others also wear them. In the 1980s, board shorts were called “jams”. Boxer shorts: Mainly used as male underwear. Some years ago, this term also related to a basic style male short. Boyshorts: Similar to boxer briefs, but for females. Bun huggers: Short, tight, athletic shorts also known as “racing briefs”, commonly made from spandex and/or nylon. These shorts are compulsory for girls and women in some schools and for some adult athletic events such as volleyball. It is claimed that their tight fit and the fact that they barely go down past the buttocks give wearers an unhindered range of motion that is necessary in sports such as volleyball. However, the figure-hugging nature of these shorts makes some wearers feel uncomfortable, and making them compulsory for women has been described as “venturing into the arena of athlete exploitation”. Bun huggers for men also exist. These resemble boxer briefs. Cargo shorts: Typically khaki shorts with cargo pockets. Similar to cargo pants, but around knee-length. Culottes: A divided skirt resembling a pair of loose-cut shorts, originally popularized as a practical horse and bicycle-riding garment by dress reform feminists at the turn of the 20th century. Also commonly known as “bike shorts”. Dolphin shorts: An athletic style of shorts, notable for visible binding of an often contrasting color. The name may refer to a side-view of the binding of each leg’s lower hem, resembling the shape of a dolphin tail. Like gym shorts, they often feature a cord to be tied around the waist at the front. These were a popular trend in the 1980s gym scene. Gym shorts: Cotton, spandex, polyester(which can be divided into even more subsections such as dazzle [a ribbed shiny effect], shimmer [like dazzle but not ribbed], or other things), or other synthetic fiber. Usually has a cord sewn in that can be tied at the front, can be tied on the inside or outside, depending on the short. Gym shorts are often worn in gym class or for participation in sports, hence the name, but they are worn as casual wear almost as much, especially in adolescents. They are usually not form fitting when worn by men or female athletes, but are often form fitting when worn by women as casual dress. Length is usually from just above the knee to just below the knee. In the 1970s and 1980s in the US gym shorts were often form fitting and only slightly longer than boxer shorts. Hot pants: While categorized as “short shorts” they commonly have an inseam length of two inches or less. These are short, tight shorts, usually made of cotton, nylon, or some other common material. They are meant to emphasize the buttocks and the legs. Hot pants are sometimes worn with dark tights and knee-length boots to create an edgy, sexy look. Hot pants were very popular in the early 1970s, especially with baseball’s Philadelphia Phillies, who created a unit of usherettes called the Hot Pants Patrol, but the shorts declined in popularity during the late 1970s. This fashion revived in the 1990s. Jorts: Jean shorts. In the mid 1980s, before the term “jorts” had entered widespread usage, some fashion gurus had already begun to insult jorts wearers in an attempt to minimize the impact of jorts upon the fashion world. These transparent attempts to defame jorts and other such garments were later dubbed “sharts.” Lederhosen: Traditional German leather shorts. Plaid shorts: fabricated woven of differently colored yarns in a crossbarred pattern. Popularized by “skater” stores, but now becoming more “preppy” Running shorts: Reach only the upper thigh; intended to provide maximum freedom of movement in sports activities. These are often made from Nylon, which has the advantage of being very hardwearing. After Adidas sponsored the 1980 Olympic Games [3], Adidas nylon track shorts were a fashion item for some years. Skorts: Have a piece of fabric in front, creating the illusion of being a skirt from the front. The term is a portmanteau of “skirt” and “shorts”. Short shorts: By the mid-1950s, post-WWII Americans were beginning to relax and enjoy both their new economic and baby booms as their offspring which were just entering their teens. Television and rock’n'roll captured taste and fashion, including the new “short shorts” fad, since Bermuda shorts were considered old, dull, and “fuddy-duddy” although, as History of Costume (ISBN 0882251376) author and FIT Professor Rachel Kemper noted, “Short shorts left a girl’s ass hanging out.” The Royal Teens wrote and sang the song “Short Shorts” (1957) (in which “short shorts” is mentioned 18 times). A look at players listed in the box score from the loss to the Magic shows just three players remaining from the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA championship runner up team from the 2006-2007 season: Daniel Gibson, Anderson Varejo and that other guy.

And the only starter on rosters from both editions is that other guy.

In the time between the two versions of Cavs, the team has made a lot of moves to find the missing pieces of the Championship puzzle to compliment that other guy – LeBron, and to keep him from testing the free agency waters.

After failing to San Antonio in the finals that year, the Cavs were eliminated by the Celtics in the next post season, and last year they couldn’t get past the Magic.  Orlando has always been a tough team for the Cavs, matchup-wise, and so this recent edition of Cavs was built specifically to overcome that obstacle.

Shaq was brought in to provide a formidable presence in the middle to counter Superman, aka Dwight Howard, and last week the Cavs employed what will be the final piece of the puzzle – someone who gives them another big body, a perimeter game and quality minutes – Antawn Jamison.

No longer is Cleveland seen as a one-star town, as LeBron now shares the stage with Shaq and Jamison.  And many people seem to think the Jamison trade makes the Cavs the favorite to finally win the title.

They are the odds on favorite to win the East at all betting shops, and a short distance in front of the Lakers to win the championship at most others.

Considering history and current odds (-165, see below), the wager “Cavs to win the East” has no value.  In fact, it flat out sucks.  To do so, they would have to outlast Boston, who already beat them in Cleveland at the start of the season, and Orlando, who they are 1-1 against thus far this year.  But it is the second of those games that is most telling, if you are trying to decide whether or not to lay future odds on Cleveland.

Yesterday, the team that gives them fits, matchup-wise, the Magic, beat them 101-95 on national television, with the newly acquired Jamison.  Is it possible the new chemistry is combustible?  Since Antawn came over, the Cavaliers are 0-3, with one of the losses to a Denver squad that is a possible finals opponent, as the Nuggets just may be the team that dethrones the Lakers.  And the Nuggets played that game WITHOUT Carmelo Anthony, and IN Cleveland!

Regardless of the outcomes, the payoff odds for the Cavs to win the East and/or the Championship just don’t seem like a good investment when weighing the risks.

Despite all the best efforts of GM Danny Ferry, despite all the changing of the guards, forward and center over the past three years, the Cavs are still unlikely to win the Championship again this season.  And quite possibly, lose the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes too.

Improving Your Basketball Game with Strength Training and Endurance Techniques

When we sit and watch a basketball game, we are always yelling at our team for every screw up they throw our way. We are fans – and as fans – it is our job to judge, heckle and to annoy these men who, as far as we are concerned, are not worth as much as they are paid to play a “simple sport” or “game.” Basketball is big business like any other sport.

Make no bones about it though – it is not easy. There are a lot of things that go into making a great basketball player and height, surprisingly, is not one of them. It helps – do not get me wrong – but there have been some short men to play the sport over the last hundred years or so (Muggsy Bogues to name one of recent play). Strength, stamina and endurance are all important factors in your basketball game. The following simple techniques will help you achieve your potential.

1) Run the Wood

Endurance is a major factor in the game of basketball and you are required to constantly run, run, run up and down the court. So in order to meet the needs of the game, this is what you do – run up and down a Basketball Court for 20 minutes to start. Gradually increase your time and speed. Timing your pivots and run backs are important as well, so make sure to touch the line before you pivot as making quick changes during a game are important.

2) Tire Throw

Besides throwing the basketball into a hoop, you always need to be able to pass with accuracy. A simple way to accomplish this feat is by stealing an idea from football players. Unused car tires make a perfect target for throwing your “rock” and hitting the mark. If you have some friends who want to improve their skills at the same time, you can take turns running in-between several hanging tires, to pass the ball through the holes, avoiding possible steals.

3) Nothing Beats Calisthenics

No one likes doing these. I know I hated them. It brings me back to high school gym class, but nothing can get your stamina, endurance and strength up as much as doing jumping jacks, push ups, pull ups and up downs (jogging in place, hitting the floor and getting up to do it all again).

Doing these simple things for at least 20 minutes before your practice will help you gain endurance, stamina and strength to make your game all that much more improved.

Why is it in Canada the perpetrators have all the rights at the expense of victims?

No death penalty for violent offenders, short jail terms, wasted money on rehab programs for hard drug users and psychopaths, no funding for counseling and treatment for victims, endless discussions over the rights of various accused individuals and perpetrators, no ability to defend oneself reasonably (I do agree with gun control) but you can’t carry or use red pepper spray, a bottle, knife or anything against an intruder or someone who assaults you, cozy federal jails with schooling and basketball courts, human rights activists concerned about people doing hard time, Youth Offender’s Act, insistence that fourteen-year-olds cannot develop enough morality to reject violent acts, that mental illness and drug use are excuses for release and avoiding jail time (they don’t put them in institutions for life, either)….sounds like a kangaroo court system
